Portraits

My portrait work explores the space between representation and abstraction. Working in charcoal and oil, I use expressive mark-making, layered surfaces and selective detail to create portraits that are less concerned with perfect likeness and more interested in emotion, memory and the stories people bring to the work. Each piece balances observation with interpretation, inviting the viewer to complete the narrative for themselves.

Every portrait has a brief phase where it looks absolutely terrible.
Experience has taught me not to panic until the very end.
